State Street® SPDR® S&P® Global Natural Resources ETF (GNR): Diversified Exposure to Essential Industries

This month’s Fund Focus is one of the current funds in our new Thematic Strategies. The Thematic Strategies are constructed using a thematic, top-down investment process in which asset class, sector, factor, or structural themes are identified and expressed through diversified investment vehicles. Portfolio construction emphasizes diversification across multiple themes rather than reliance on a single narrative or outcome. The three configurations of the model are Equity Thematic Strategy, Fixed Income Thematic Strategy, and Balanced Thematic Strategy (approximately 50% Equity / 50% Fixed Income). With all the talk and fears of escalating oil prices, some clients have asked if it makes sense to have specific exposure to oil or energy stocks. While news of the day can temporarily drive speculation in a sector of the market for some time, investors should consider a longer-term perspective and a more diversified approach to investing in a specific area of the market.

The State Street® SPDR® S&P® Global Natural Resources ETF is designed to provide investors with exposure to companies involved in the global natural resources sector. The fund holds approximately 90 of the largest publicly traded companies in three key segments: agriculture, energy, and metals & mining, offering a broad diversification within a single investment vehicle.

By investing in companies that produce and manage essential commodities, the ETF seeks to benefit from long-term global demand driven by population growth, industrial development, and economic expansion. Its global approach allows investors to access opportunities across both developed and emerging markets.

The ETF may appeal to investors looking to diversify their portfolios beyond traditional stocks and bonds while gaining exposure to sectors that can potentially benefit from inflationary environments. However, like all sector-focused investments, it is subject to market volatility, commodity price fluctuations, and geopolitical risks.

Overall, the State Street® SPDR® S&P® Global Natural Resources ETF offers a convenient way to invest in a broad range of natural resource companies worldwide, making it a useful option for investors seeking long-term exposure to essential global industries.

Women Retire With 65% Less Saved.
Here's Why That Number Isn't Fixed.

Retirement Planning for Women: How To Create Long-Term Financial Security

The average woman's 401(k) balance runs about 65% lower than a man's, and her annual contributions lag by 43%, according to the American Retirement Association's 2026 research. Career interruptions, caregiving responsibilities, and a longer life expectancy (81.1 years on average, compared to 75.8 for men) all play a role.

None of that gap is permanent. Catch-up contributions, spousal IRAs during career breaks, and a Social Security claiming strategy built for a longer retirement can each close part of the distance.

In honor of Women's Retirement Security Day on July 14, our latest article walks through where to start.

If you'd like to review your retirement strategy or discuss your long-term goals, we're always here as a resource.

A Look Across the Market

Key Takeaways from Q2 2026

  • Stocks Just Posted Their Best Quarter Since 2020. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 recorded their best quarterly performance in six years, with market gains broadening beyond large technology companies to include small-cap and value stocks.

  • Semiconductor Stocks Continued Their Strong Run. Ongoing investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure remained a major driver of market performance during the second quarter.

  • The Federal Reserve Maintained a Cautious Approach. Inflation concerns remained a key focus, leading investors to adjust expectations around the timing of future interest rate changes.

  • Energy Prices Moved Lower. Oil prices retreated as geopolitical tensions eased, helping reduce one potential source of inflation pressure.
